Certified Tutor
I am an Honors College graduate of Appalachian State University. I completed my Bachelor of Science in Anthropology with a concentration in biological anthropology and minor in geology. I discovered a passion for teaching while at college by working as a camp counselor at the Forensic Anthropology Training Camp that was offered each summer. This program was open to high schoolers interested in anthropology, anatomy, and forensic science, and engaged university students to guide high schoolers through the basics of human remains recovery and analysis. Because my interests were shifting from pure science to biocultural studies and the ethical transformation of anthropology, I decided to obtain my TEFL/TESL/TESOL certification and teach English in mainland China rather than immediately pursuing graduate school. At a small vocational college for aspiring flight attendants, I applied interactive classroom strategies that focused on authentic engagement with the target language through pair and group activities. I was thus able to incorporate multiple learning styles to maximize student participation and growth. After 4 years working first in sales and then in the finance industry, I was finally late diagnosed as neurodivergent and thus able to clearly identify my own strengths. I have recently started making steps to re-enter the education industry. I have worked as an algebra tutor for high school freshmen for several months through another tutoring program. There I was able to practice Social Emotional Learning (SEL) models and executive functioning (EF) management strategies. My focus on building mentorship rapport, particularly with underserved students whose learning style does not mesh well with public school curriculum, led to significant growth within the classroom. I consider myself a flexible and adaptable person sensitive to differences, and focus on identifying and utilizing strengths. I believe the most successful person is the most confident one, and every student deserves the opportunity to shine! I myself plan on becoming a licensed educator. In addition to my professional interests in science and math, I am also a hobbyist writer, passionate reader, and proud fur parent of a cat and a dog.
