Certified Tutor
I hold a BA English literature and language from the University of Oxford, with four years of professional tutoring experience, and five years of voluntary tutoring. I am experienced tutoring a range of subjects within the realm of English.
In applications I have completed several full application courses with students from beginning to end, from choosing schools through to entrance exams to interview prep, for primary entrance, secondary entrance, and Oxbridge entrance. This method of applications teaching helps build a bond with the student, allowing me and them to discover their key skills and aim high.
In Literature, I have taught from fundamental reading skills all the way to A-Level, including OCR, AQA, Edexcel, IB, and CIE exam boards. I have collected a vast amount of resources for all of these assessments, ready to be tailored to each individual students needs.
In Language, I have experience teaching creative and transactional writing, as well as English as a Foreign/Second Language. I have successfully tutored 100% of my past students through the UKIset and IELTs to their desired schools. I am also experienced with the 11+, 13+, ISEB and MAP test entry exams.
I take great pride in the skills and experiences I have accumulated along the way. In teaching, there is no substitute for experience, and I have taught students from a wide range of backgrounds (both international and home students) and age ranges (from 8-18), all with varying ranges of ability. Throughout these experiences I have fine-tuned my resources and approach to different students, and I pride myself on being able to adapt to an individuals needs, even when they change on a day to day basis.
I love helping students, seeing them grow from strength to strength and find their personal passion in literature and language is rewarding for both them, and myself. I have tailored my teaching style to promote a focus on development and progression, this includes detailed course of study plans to highlight where you are, where you want to be, and how we'll get their together. Learning is about skill and knowledge, but also about confidence, and one of my favourite things about my work is seeing my students grow into confident intellectuals in the English language.
Through my studies in BA English Literature and Language at the University of Oxford, I have found the remarkable power of both personal passion, and interactive teaching. Throughout my studies I found that tailoring my work to my interests has driven my intellectual pursuits from strength to strength, and it is this discovery that pushes me to tailor the curriculum to push each indivdual in their personal interests. The small group classes and deeply interactive learning style at Oxford has shaped me as both a learner and a teacher. In a subject like English, it is amazing that students can make you see your own subject in completely new ways, and this engagement with each students ideas is something I value highly.
Outside of academia I value creativity above all else. I self-taught myself knitting, crochet, sewing, drawing, painting and printing. I love to bring the creative into my lessons, and utilize my own skills in design to create invigorating and unique learning materials.
Overall, my teaching philosophy is one focused on individual potential. I drive to make every lesson not only useful, but interactive, creative, and inspiring. I want every student to come away from their literature or language lessons having learnt a little bit more about what English means: how to understand others' voices, and find your own!
