I have 28 years of experience teaching a variety of science courses for universities, community colleges, public high schools, summer camps and a variety of informal science education programs. I have the experience, skills, and qualifications necessary to create an educational experience in which students, regardless of their race, age, or cultural background can find success. As a scientist and educator my goal as a tutor is to help the student not only better understand the subject, but to learn study skills and strategies that will serve them throughout their life.
I earned biology degrees from Bowling Green State University (B. S.) and Texas A and M University (M. S.). At both universities I focused on marine biology. My doctorate is in geology from the University of Cincinnati where I studied the paleontology.
My teaching career began as an undergraduate tutor helping my peers better understand their science and math courses. Next I taught undergraduate science labs as a graduate student. For five years I was a lecturer and then Assistant Professor of Geology at Northern Kentucky University teaching Physical Geology, Earth History, Geomorphology, Invertebrate Paleontology, Structural Geology, and Mineralogy.
I taught in the Austin Independent School District from 2000-2017. My first three years were at Johnston High School where I taught Anatomy and Physiology (Honors), Aquatic Science and Integrated Physics and Chemistry. I transferred to Austin High School in 2003 and taught Astronomy, Earth and Space Science, Physics and a dual credit Geoscience course, "Earth, Wind and Fire" for the OnRamps Program of the University of Texas at Austin.
After retiring in 2017 I started Undersea Naturalist, an online informal science educational resource. The program was created for people who love the ocean and the vast amounts of life it contains. It is geared for scuba divers, snorkelers, beach goers, or anyone curious about marine life.
