Myra: Mundelein tutor
Certified Tutor
I've worked with kids from first grade through high school for decades. Writing should be fun, not a chore. I teach grammar and spelling, of course, but creativity is just as important. I treat my students as budding professional writers and encourage them to use the tools writers use to develop and express interesting ideas.
I'm also a novelist and professional writing coach. Nearly 1,500 writers from all over the world attended my writing seminars on Eventbrite. My job is to encourage them, help them build solid writing skills, and learn to see their own strengths and weaknesses.
Before focusing on novels, I spent decades writing scripts for TV and radio, including hundreds of political ads, training videos, and corporate marketing videos.
My approach to teaching is NOT the traditional academic approach. I treat my students, no matter their age, like WRITERS, and teach them what I've learned from other writers. Great writing is great storytelling, and anybody with the will to improve and grow can learn the skills that great writers use to keep reading turning pages.
Grammar and sentence structure are important because readers expect a writer to communicate well, so I include that in my teaching as a practical and useful skill.
I also teach my writers to read like writers--thinking about how a story is unfolded, what they like and don't like about the language, sentence structure, and message of a story.
