I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I am a graduate of Southern Illinois University and received my Bachelor of Science in Workforce Education & Development with a focus on Training & Development. I worked for the Department of the Navy for over twenty years in the areas of Training, Human Resources and Continuous Process Improvement. While I was glad to be instrumental in my positions that focused on Human Capital Management, I was ready to pursue my real passion--teaching children. For the last 4 years I have been teaching English to Chinese students by teaching various subjects such as Math, Social Studies, Science, Public Speaking and my two favorite subjects, Reading and Grammar. The age of the children ranged from 4-16 years. I thoroughly enjoyed the one-to-one classes as it allowed me to get to know the child and the best way to help each one.
My teaching philosophy is this: I believe that a teaching environment should allow children the opportunity to reach their potential when it comes to being educated, no matter their intelligence, ability, background, or personality. As a child, I was extremely shy and often had difficulty participating in class discussions and presentations. Because of this, my grades suffered. I wish I had someone reach out to me and help me during those years. Even if someone had tutored me and given me a little encouragement, I am certain I would have flourished. Because of this experience, I have the drive to help and encourage others and support them in reaching their education goals. And I like to do so in a fun and positive environment.
