While I teach history as a day job, I think in numbers at all other hours of the day. Whether it is carpentry, music, or sports, I see math as integral to our lived experience. It is my goal as an educator to bridge the gap between math in the abstract and in the everyday so that students can leverage what they know and understand to make sense of the world of numbers.
I am a graduate of the University of Virginia where I earned a B.A. in Music and History. After college, I taught high school history in Africa and Maryland, conducted a school band, coached basketball, directed sailing programs, and worked at a furniture-making shop. Before moving to New York City last year, I received my M.Ed. from Vanderbilt University where I wrote my thesis on shop class and its value outside of vocational training. My dream is to teach geometry via the woodshop, but in the meantime, I am enjoying teaching history and tutoring math.
I will feel successful when my students take ownership of their education, feel more confident in their understanding of math, and experience joy in learning.
