Teaching is an honorable profession that involves shaping the future of learners. My first teaching experience began in 2008 as a Teaching Assistant at the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, where I obtained my B.Sc. in Chemistry. My passion and enthusiasm in the subject matter and my interest in helping others to understand it, has helped me immensely to develop the "teacher" in me.
Thereafter, I started my graduate career in 2010 at the University of Arizona where I obtained a master's degree in chemistry. My performance has always exceeded the high standards set by the teaching assistant and laboratory course evaluation committee and I have received awards as a symbol of their appreciation of my performance. I was able to work with well-experienced supervisors during this time.
After my master's degree, in 2014 I enrolled as a doctoral student at Texas Tech University to pursue my studies. Since then I continued my career as a Graduate Teaching Assistant until I graduated with my Ph. D. in chemistry in December 2019.
Not only the faculty input and peer discussions but also the student responses have helped me throughout to improve my teaching skills.
My experience teaching various levels and branches had helped me immensely to tailor my methods to best fit different individuals. However, I enjoy teaching general chemistry to undergraduate students the most. I believe in chemical thinking to generate curiosity among the learners and motivate them to learn chemistry. I strongly encourage the "active learning method" as my teaching strategy in order to improve their critical thinking, problem-solving, ability. Since I myself is a curious learner I firmly believe that teaching is the best way to learn. Through teaching, one can keep learning all through life. The satisfaction of learning and helping others to achieve the same is the reason I have always enjoyed my career as a teacher.
In my leisure, I watch movies, listen to music and play the piano.
