My time at Bowdoin, both in the classroom and the lab, has convinced me that I want to be a research chemistry professor. My organic chemistry professor, Michael Danahy and my research advisor, Richard Broene, have shaped and challenged me to be a critical thinker. And if I can someday mean half as much to one student as they mean to me then I will have achieved more than I could have ever dreamed. Because of my desire to become a professor and my desire to help educate and inform others, I have undertaken a variety of leadership and mentoring roles within Bowdoin's chemistry department. I have worked as an inorganic lab teaching assistant and helped those taking organic chemistry work and to grow as lab workers in that field. I also work as a study group leader for organic chemistry students as well as tutoring students in the subject independently. I am the president of Bowdoin's chemistry club, which includes organising outreach from the scientific community to middle and elementary schools. I organise an annual science day that brings 5th to Bowdoin's campus for scientific demonstrations from different departments. I also tutor local high school students in AP chemistry. I am passionate about educating others and want those taking chemistry to truly appreciate the depth and intricacies of the subject. It is these leadership and educational abilities that I believe would make me a strong addition to any program.
