Certified Tutor
My name is Matthew Allen, and I am currently pursuing a career in science journalism. I graduated with a Master's in Neuroscience from Tulane University in 2017, after having graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 2016. Through my lab experience as a student and professionally, as well as rigorous coursework at Tulane, I have garnered a sophisticated understanding of cell and molecular biology, electrophysiological activity of neurons, neuroanatomical structures and corresponding functions in mammalian brain circuitry. In addition, I am well-versed in endocrinology, immunology and psychopharmacology among many other fields related to neuroscience. If given the opportunity, I am confident I would be able to communicate technical science to a lay audience through my proficiency in writing, particularly in my areas of expertise. My most recent work experience as a paralegal gave me a chance to communicate complicated medical jargon to our clients, many of which did not have science backgrounds, where I discovered my ability and enjoyment in this part of my job. This background uniquely situates me for a role as a science tutor. I have experience with kids of all ages from my time spent as a camp counselor during my summers home from college, further qualifying me to help middle school and high school students wanting supplemental instruction in a variety of science courses.
