Learning is a gift we all too often take for granted. In 21st century America, the modern conveniences of universal, public education have made learning seem like an obligatory chore. The classroom has become a sort of detention center that keeps us away from the real pleasures of life. Books engender a certain distaste. If only memories were as true and consistent as the history archived in books and taught in classrooms! Not so very long ago, in this very country, education was reserved for only the most privileged. Women were barred from many schools, especially the most elite. African Americans and people of other minority races were deprived of educational opportunities through Jim Crow and segregation. Education was understood as a means of personal betterment, vocational opportunity, and independence. Our ancestors would be deeply alarmed and insulted if they knew how little respect is given to education in the modern age.
As a tutor, I want to instill in students a love for learning coupled with an enlightened perspective of education as a whole. Learning can be challenging, but modern students are blessed to have access to books, resources, and facilities catered to their individual progress. I hope to apply my skills and knowledge for the benefit of my students.
I recently graduated from the University of Nevada Las Vegas with a BA in History (May 2020). My current grade is 4.0, pending the final semester. I will be attending graduate school in the fall for an MA in International Relations/Political Science, which will be a stepping stone to a PhD. I have tutored for a number of years, including at UNLV. My area of expertise includes History, Political Science, Sociology, and English.
I would describe my teaching style as an advisory approach. I want my students to find their own voice and develop their own perspectives. My job is to iron out the technical problems, to help them grasp the material, and to give them tips on how to ace courses and tests.
Outside of academia, I usually spend my time behind the lens of a Nikon 3500 DSLR, photographing the places I visit (China, Malaysia, Belgium, Peru, etc.). Reading has always been my first passion, and I particularly love Dickens, Lao Tzu, Charlotte Bronte, and Mark Twain. I also have a few pets, including a Russian Tortoise.
