I am passionate about helping students because I went through such a hard time and sometimes the only thing that kept me going was the support I received at the tutoring services at my school. They understood where I was coming from because they too had gone through similar experiences. Just as I was supported, I want to be there for those who are also hanging by a thread and need that support.
I have had mostly one-on-one sessions but have had a few group sessions, especially as a teaching assistant, with students of all ranges and capabilities. I try to meet students where they are at and let them decide which direction they want to go in, and support them around that direction. I find that when you involve students, regardless of age, in their own learning, they have more of a stake in it and are more proactive because of it.
I was a part of the Suny Fredonia Chemistry and Biochemistry Department. I also spent a short time at City College of New York, which is known as one of the best schools in the CUNY system. I am also currently three classes from earning my Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. As of now, I tutor Algebra, Calculus, College English, Math, Middle School Math, Pre-Algebra, Science, and Thermodynamics. I would like to expand my areas of tutoring and I am currently working on that goal. As for my teaching philosophy, I remind myself that each student lives an entirely different world that comes with complications that I might never be able to imagine. They also come with perspectives and insights that are unique, which allow them to see each problem from different points of view. I believe that as someone seeking to help others in their studies, and as someone who understands that our lives do influence and interfere with our studies despite our wishes, I take a somewhat holistic approach to tutoring. That is why I try to relate chemistry to universal themes and situations in our lives, to be compassionate, and to constantly shift my tutoring styles and methods to tailor them to each individual student. I use the lessons and experiences that I gained in both my personal and academic experiences to provide the best tutoring services that I can, and to build the relationships that are so essential in tutoring and student learning. I hope to continue to expand these experiences, to learn with many other students, and to support them in navigating the hurdles that are in their academic lives.
