As a former Marianist Brother, I have viewed my teaching, not as a job, but as a vocation. During my teaching career I have tried to instill in my students the importance in their lives of the chemistry courses they have to take. Chemistry is all around them. Any object they touch or use involves chemistry. Even biology has now moved into the molecular level. Simultaneously, the writing, reading, and math skills incorporated into my chemistry courses will help my students immensely on the collegiate level. I want my students to grow into adults who respect the world around them and appreciate the role chemistry plays in their lives. I have always incorporated demos and experiments in my classroom. My role is to lead the students into an understanding of the underlying chemistry concepts so that they can apply their knowledge into solving the problems they will meet. I especially try to eliminate the need/crutch of simply memorizing equations and information. Chemistry classes should be not only be challenging and rewarding but also result in a fun filled environment.
