I received a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy with a minor in History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2015. Immediately after graduation, I was hired to teach 6th grade science and social studies at a Title I middle school in Greensboro, North Carolina, where I taught for 2 years. During my free time, I also tutored as a volunteer to elementary and middle school students in math and English. My teaching/tutoring experience also includes time as a tutor in high school English. During my time in the classroom, I learned that I am most interested in working with students on an individual basis, where I can really get to know each student. Now I aim to cultivate my skills as an educator primarily through tutoring one-on-one and in small groups. Regardless of the age I teach or the subject I am tutoring in, I aspire to be a quality educator who embraces the uniqueness and cultivates the greatness of every student I have the privilege to meet. I believe that every student is a unique person first, and my approach in teaching is to take the time to get to know the person I am working with, so that I can better understand their purpose and goals in their learning endeavors. Ideally I like to incorporate my students' interests in the topics we study, along with more formal review. We are more than the grades and the scores we produce, and I aim to keep that in mind in my teaching.
I am fortunate that the subjects I tutor in are also areas that interest me in my personal life. I tutor primarily in English, and during my free time I love to read existential novels and science fiction, and write poetry and short stories. I also tutor in the social sciences, which connects to my passion for social justice and human rights issues. My other interests include film, music, taking walks around the city, hiking, and eating Thai food. I'm excited to meet awesome students and find ways to grow as lovers of knowledge.
