I am passionate about helping students for several reasons. First of all, I enjoy thinking about how to best explain a topic in a logical way to students. This challenges me, and in the end, helps me to understand a topic better. Secondly, I am firm believer that education enriches the lives of my students. I feel that I am helping students to have a better understanding of the world, and of themselves.

I have been working with students for nearly twenty years. I've taught at the community college level now for over five years. I also taught for a short time as a student teacher in a high school. I have a bachelor's degree in math and physics from Hillsdale College, and a master's degree in statistics from North Carolina State University.

I teach just about every mathematical topic offered at Varsity Tutors. My favorite subjects to teach are algebra, trigonometry, statistics, and calculus. I like trying to convince students that algebra is very useful and interesting. I also love teaching trigonometry because of how tightly-knit the topic is. Finally, I also really enjoy calculus because of its applications to geometry, physics, and so many other fields.

My philosophy for tutoring is to use a sensible mixture of both theory and showing students "how to get the answer." A lot of teachers denigrate the "how to get the answer" and prefer to spend time on theory. I used to be that way, but now I think that the two approaches are not as separate as I used to think. I like to do both when I teach.

Outside of work, I love spending time with my wife and family. I also love studying the French and Vietnamese languages, as well as reading French, Vietnamese, and American history.
