I graduated with a dual bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry from Northern Arizona University (NAU) in Flagstaff, AZ and continued my education with a master's degree in chemistry from Arizona State University (ASU) in Tempe, AZ. Immediately after that I began working at Vertex Pharmaceuticals in lovely San Diego, CA as a research associate in medicinal/organic chemistry and continued to do so for nearly four years.
During my journey at NAU, I tutored for six semesters primarily in the subjects of general chemistry, organic chemistry and biochemistry (I also tutored, albeit to a lesser extent, biology, physics and some math). During my two years at ASU I was a graduate teaching assistant for undergraduate general and organic chemistry labs.
I have loved tutoring and helping students struggling in the sciences ever since I can remember. While tutoring at NAU I was told by many of my students that they were finally able to grasp the concepts, and given comments in my reviews like, "Why can't my teachers explain things in such basic terms like Gabriel? He really makes it easy to understand." My philosophy in tutoring involves building a solid foundation of core concepts in the subject, a firm grasp of basic terminology, and analogy/visualization, where appropriate.
Although I haven't tutored formally yet in French, I have taken three years of French and would love to tutor the subject. I even went to France for six weeks while in high school and learned more in that short time than I did from the three years of formal classes! That was truly an unforgettable and life-changing journey!
Nonetheless, my favorite subject to tutor is chemistry (primarily general or organic). I have been "in love" with chemistry ever since my high school chemistry teacher inspired me. As I mentioned above, I took that passion to the next level with some "real world" chemistry experience in the pharmaceutical industry. So not only do I have a solid foundation of knowledge in chemistry, but I also have experience with application of that knowledge to "real world" chemistry problems.
When I'm not tutoring, I enjoy jogging, biking, hiking/camping, reading (classic literature and science), board/video games, and, occasionally, chess.
In closing, I will do my best, in the most professional manner, to transfer knowledge and foster confidence and independence with each and every one of my students.
