Certified Tutor
Hi, my name is Emily. I graduated with honors from Georgetown University with a degree in Comparative Literature, Linguistics and Chinese. I am passionate about all things language, from the measly article to the next great American Novel. While working for a while in the private sector and as a freelancer abroad, I realized that what I was truly passionate about was mentoring and teaching people, sharing my love of language and literature. Thus far, I have worked with English as a Second Language learners in Taipei, and worked as a freelance English Editor of resumes, college application essays, cover letters and more. As a tutor, I am always looking for new fun and creative ways to engage students in the material, to help them see the ins and outs of how language is put together whether its a sentence or a five-paragraph persuasive essay.
My academic background in linguistics and comparative literature provide not only a grounding in the English language and the finer points of grammatical analysis, but also gives me a foundation in literary theory. I am well equipped to work with students through the analysis of dense passages of fiction and non-fiction, as well as parse out any grammatical and usage errors they may have. This gives students the opportunity to understand the how and why of language as opposed to simply memorizing arbitrary rules.
Finally, with a Chinese minor from Georgetown and a Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) proficiency of 5 (fluent), and having learned Chinese myself as a foreign language, I feel equipped to help beginner to intermediate learners of Chinese accomplish their language goals in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. I have participated and observed in many language classrooms and am prepared with strategies to overcome common problems in Mandarin learning (the characters, the tones, the "lack of" grammar etc.).
Outside of tutoring, I am still dedicated to education and am pursuing a masters of education at the Relay Graduate School of Education. When not thinking about how to further knowledge in the next generation I enjoy cooking, dancing, and watching foreign cinema.
Ultimately, what is most important is putting the improvement of the student first, and to that end I am always receptive to comments and suggestions. Please do not hesitate to ask questions, we cannot learn without inquiry!
