My name is Joshua and I'm a senior at New Mexico Tech graduating in May with a Bachelor's degree in Biology with a minor in Materials Engineering. I've always had a strong love of learning, especially in the fields of science and literature. Since childhood, I've been a voracious reader. These habits have carried on throughout my life, and currently I love reading science fiction and science non-fiction. I've always excelled in writing and literature, and I've also worked as a contributor to the New Mexico Tech Newspaper: Paydirt. I've also assisted my fellow classmates in various writing assignments for classes in addition to various applications. I consider myself incredibly friendly and easygoing and I can't wait to help out as many students as I can!

What is your teaching philosophy?
I would like to think that my teaching philosophy strays from the traditional lecture format. I like to engage with students as much as possible, and allow for maximum independent thinking. I believe working as a team with student and allowing them to take the lead in independent learning is the best possible approach.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
First, I would like to ask the student several questions. I'd like to get an overview of the assignment, and then attempt to understand the purpose of the assignment. I would then ask the student what approach they would think to be beneficial to starting the assignment, and work off of their ideas and opinions.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I believe independent learning comes from a place of confidence and guidance. I believe that I can allow students to take charge on an assignment, while closely monitoring their progress and goals.
