What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that the teaching process is individual to every learner and as such, believe learning should be customized and altered to the needs every unique student.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

During first sessions with students, I usually like to gauge where the student is at knowledge-wise by administering some sort of pre-test, whether verbal or written. This helps me to understand what the student already knows really well and in what areas they need the most help.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Learning is all about autonomy, and as such, I think trusting my students and letting them complete educational tasks is the best way to help them strengthen their independence and confidence. Students don't gain much from being coddled; thus, I like to hold my students to higher standards and let the lessons take us where they may.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I often find that, for longer study sessions, small breaks where the student(s) and I play games are good ways to keep the momentum. In addition, small prizes and encouragement/ positive reinforcement go a long way in empowering students, compelling them to want to keep working.
