What is your teaching philosophy?

I think that the best learning comes from teaching. Once I believe a student fully understands a concept, then I would like them to prove it by walking me through a problem as they would a peer or other student in the class.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

First off, I think it is important to establish a baseline. Once this is established, we work by strengthening the baseline, building up knowledge, and then finding the best technique for independent learning and studying.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I believe that a every person is unique, and their own learning is no exception. The most important thing about learning is knowing one's self and knowing the techniques that work best for them. By using examples, I can help the student find what works best for them and strengthen their techniques.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I think positive feedback is important. Even when a student is incorrect, I think it is important to understand why their brain went there and help them redirect it into the correct area. Most of the time, students make common mistakes because of some misunderstanding with the concept. If the student can understand how or when they are wrong, they begin to prepare for being correct more often.
