Hello! My name is Joshua! I am a second-year student at the University of South Florida, studying mechanical engineering. I am also in the NROTC program and will commission into the Navy in 2019. My favorite sport is football and my favorite team is the Baltimore Ravens [yes, I will tutor you even if you like the Steelers ;) ]. I have two years of experience teaching Theater in a classroom. I am a fan of the theater and my favorite plays are Hamlet and Waiting for Godot. I love teaching, and it runs in my blood (Both of my parents are teachers). My teaching style is energetic, engaging and fun. I believe that learning is not about passing tests, but expanding your knowledge, and I am willing to help you do this in any way I can and can adapt lessons to fit your interests. This way, you want to learn the material, and when it comes time to take a test, you are showing what you know and not what you memorized.
I have two younger sisters, with whom I occasionally share my love and knowledge of math and science. I have experience in algebra, trigonometry, and Calculus, but I am definitely the most comfortable with Calculus 1, and algebra. I also have a love for physics, specifically kinematics and statics (Free body diagrams!!!). I also did well with (and strangely enjoyed) chemistry in high school and in college! Looking for help with standardized tests? I can help with SAT/ACT test strategies and preparation, as I spent my whole senior year of high school preparing for these tests. I have also taken and scored in the 80s for the ASVAB. Finally, I enjoy writing. If you are looking to impress others, I have experience writing poetry and scripts. Essentially, I enjoy creative writing and can assist in expository writing.
As far as other interests, I am a part-time nerd and love Star wars and superheroes, my favorite being batman. I am also the proud owner of a Disney annual pass, which my fianc proposed I purchase in order to accompany her. If you are curious, my favorite Princess is Ariel and my favorite Disney movies are Cars, Lion King (Let me know if you get the irony), and Toy Story.

What is your teaching philosophy?
This is dependent on the individual. Everyone has a different motivator, and it is important to recognize this. However, the most important idea is to demonstrate that what the student is doing is important and will expand them personally, no matter the field they are interested in.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I like to get to know the student so that I can better relate to them and show them how the material will be applicable to their future, thus giving them more motivation to learn the material.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Being an independent learner is vital to growth and success. It is important students seek to improve themselves outside of the classroom instead of "waiting for that class" to learn a specific subject they're interested in.
