Certified Tutor

I am attending Northampton Community College. I am majoring in Biological Sciences and plan to get my Associate Degree in Science on May 2017. Then, I plan to transfer to a four-year university to continue my education. I plan to obtain my Bachelor Degree in Science with a focus on Biochemistry. Since my second semester at Northampton Community College, I have tutoring lots of students, with different age. While I tutor a Chemistry and French, I am most passionate about Neuroscience, Language, and Microbiology. In my experience helping struggling students prepare for tests and exams, we always seem to have the most fun. At the end of the day, they get confident and sure to get good grades. They always give me feedback, which I truly consider; because we become better by improving what we are good. I am really enthusiastic, passionate and eager to learn. In fact, I am constantly doing research on subject I am not much knowledgeable about. It is really important to get educated, as I always tell my students. With that said, I try to empower those students, I give them advice, tricks and tips on how to approach certain types of problems. I believe that doing so, they will become independent and confident whenever they encounter a situation. In my spare time, I enjoy cooking, different types from American to Ivorian, French and so forth. I also exercise, because being healthy also goes by how shaped your body is. Finally, I spend time with my family and friends, they give me strength, happiness and make me want to go on with my life.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is to make the student thinks critically and make them become confident and independent when it comes to solving a problem. So, I show them a method of problem-solving, and then I ask them to see the problem in a different angle.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first lesson with a student, I would get to know the student and how much they know about the subject. From that, we will see what needs to be worked on and improved.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I will help a student become independent by giving them tools, tips, and tricks on how to successfully solve a problem. I will make them happy to learn and not be afraid to make mistakes. That way, their confidence and independence will definitely be shaped.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I will help a student stay motivated by giving them problems they are passionate about and using challenging problems that require a little more critical thinking.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, I will work step by step with them. Start from easy and basic problems. Give them tools to be successful. Tell them not to be afraid to make mistake. It is actually good to make mistakes, that way you know what is wrong and what needs to be looked at or improved.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Bring back the confidence and remove the fear of making mistakes.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Definitely, make sure the student has a lot of knowledge on that subject; then do some homework and work on problem solving strategies.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I will make them do homework and have them explain it to me, that way it is certain that they understand the material.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I will, first of all, give them tools on how to solve problems, from easy to very challenging. Then I will have them do a problem and explain how they will approach it.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I typically use books, whiteboards (to make it easy to understand), laptops (to get more practice problems), and lastly the brain, of course.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Make them read and have them explain what they understand; even if it is a small passage, it is good. I will build up their reading comprehension that way.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate a student's needs by their attitude. How you act in a situation tells it all. Also, I will see the level of stress.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt my tutoring to the student's needs really well. I tutor based on the level of knowledge, from very basic to challenging.
