Certified Tutor

I am a student at the University of Houston. I am currently pursuing a degree in Liberal Arts. A passion of mine is working with people in areas that are not their strongest. My goal is not only to help tutor a student in a specific subject, but also to give them confidence in that knowledge. The more confident a student is in their abilities, the more confident they are on tests and in class. I am really passionate about teaching mathematics. With that being said, I hope to spread my passion with as many students as I can. I promise to exhaust all resources in an effort to best suit the student.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that a strong knowledge base creates confidence. I like to hear how the student explains what they feel is their issue, and build from there. As we go, we will both figure out more and more things that the student may or may not have even know was an issue. After the student has demonstrated an understanding, I like to have the student explain it back to me. I do this because I truly feel that a person doesn't fully understand a concept until they can explain it back.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I am not only trying to teach the student a subject, but I am also trying to understand how they learn best. I want to practice problem sets in order to gauge skill level. I want to cover concepts that the student specifically asks for help with, and I like to plan a study schedule of learning for the next month.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Independent learning is essential not just for this subject, but for life learning. I want to empower a student on how to look for help and good places to find it. I want to find methods of learning tailored specifically to the student. Creating a routine on where and when to study is also important.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Finding what a student is passionate about and setting realistic goals are the key to unlocking motivation. Setting daily, weekly, and monthly goals and rewarding the student in various ways helps with this.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

After I try to explain the concept a few times, I am going to go to another concept and work on it. Letting the student take a five-minute breather or changing the topic helps their brain relax. Once relaxed, we can revisit the concept with a fresh pair of eyes.
