Provide students with a resource to allow them to ask questions and learn from the answers given. Show students a way to solve a problem rather than solving the problem and just giving an answer. In this way the student can learn the technique and use this to solve problems of a similar nature.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Outline who I am and my contact information on how I can be reached. Tell them how I will be a resource to help them solve the mathematical problems that he/she is having trouble solving. Get to know the student and gain his confidence to share his needs with me.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Provide my background concerning a topic we discuss and detail examples of how I have worked through a problem. Don't just provide an answer to a problem, but share examples and pictures if possible to show how a problem can be solved.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Try to learn what problems the student is having concerning a topic or problem. Try to learn the student's approach to this and provide an alternative if the student's approach is not appropriate. If the student's approach is in the proper direction, have the student tell how he would carry out the solution to the problem.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Provide good examples or pictures to show the student a way to learn or carry out the problem at hand. Try to understand the student's problem and provide another way to allow the student to learn the skill or concept.
