Hello, From time to time most of us need a little help. I will do my best to help guide you through the subject that you are struggling with. I use a non lecture format and our sessions should feel more like conversation. By discussing the subject matter, you are more likely to retain the information.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Some people go at slower paces while others are more fast paced. We can adjust the pace to fit your needs.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session, we could take this time to get to know each other better. We can discuss your learning style and make a plan from there. Feel free to ask any and as many questions as you would like during the first session or at any other time.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Everyone is different, but by exploring what might be holding you back, perhaps we could overcome all or some of those barriers.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Motivation comes from within. I would remind you of what you want to achieve and what you have already achieved.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If you are having trouble grabbing a concept, we will keep trying different approaches until you get it. We all learn differently, so sometimes it just takes a little time.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Reading comprehension can be learned by discussing what is being said. Once we start discussing it, I think you will find it will become easier and easier to understand.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Getting right to the point of why we are here, and being honest with each other. There is no shame if you don't understand something, and in fact that is why you are learning.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Getting motivated can be tough, especially if you are struggling in it. Hopefully together we can get you through it so it won't be so daunting.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would ask the student to repeat it back to me in their own words to make sure that they have a clear understanding. This might be frustrating at first, but much less frustrating than realizing you didn't understand it at all.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Practice, practice, practice. The more you practice, the more confident you can become.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I ask the students directly what their needs are. If they are unsure, together we can go over the material and figure out the weaknesses.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Some people go at slower paces, while others are more fast-paced. We can adjust the pace to fit your needs.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use the material that you are using, so it is important that you send me copies of the areas that you are working on.
