Steve
Certified Tutor
I am a recent graduate from the University of California - Los Angeles (UCLA) with a bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics.
I have worked as a math tutor since high school. I have a proven record of being highly detail-oriented and patient; these qualities were recognized by many of my students and their parents. The tutoring experience has made me a better communicator. Specifically, I learned to tailor my message to my audience in the most effective way. The students that I tutor tend to improve their academic performance with an incredible speed. This is because I not only taught them how to complete the problems, but I helped them to fully understand the materials as well as its application and I also assist them to build their own studying habit and schedule.
In addition, I passed all 3 SAT math exams with a score of 800 in 2011. I had taught students even with ADHD or other kinds of physical issue.

What is your teaching philosophy?
Being capable of solving the problem is only the first step of an academic success. My goal for my student is to enable them to fully understand the meaning of the material, its applications, and its operations.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would first work on creating a comfortable environment between myself and the student. After this, we will talk about the student's and their parents' expectations and goals before we start the actual session.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Building studying habits are essential for the academic success of the student. You will need to make the subject interesting for the student, as well as instruct them about the importance and applications of the subject.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
By showing them that they are on the right track, and continuing to work on improving their academic performance.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Find out what the difficulty is, and then apply the proper procedure. Different cases may need a different solving method.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I would use life-related examples that are related to the application of the subject.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
You have to build up their confidence by allowing them to see the visible process of their performance, and you also need to teach outside of the textbook.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
If it is a mathematical subject then the only way to ensure that the student understands the material is through practice exercises on its operations and concepts.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
By giving them a test that can show the student their improvement and increased understanding of the subject.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
First I will try to make sure the student and his/her parents are on the same page. They must have similar (if not the same) goal of this tutoring. After this, we can talk individually to find the difficult parts that he/she is currently having trouble with.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I mainly assign questions/homework problems for my student. After this, I will assess their performance on this material, and adjust the difficulty of the tutoring lesson.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Textbooks, online graphing resources, exams, practice questions, etc.
