What is your teaching philosophy?

I will first find out if the student has particular materials that they want to cover. I also will use the practice problems on the tutoring platform.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would start off by asking a few "get to know you" questions. I would then find out what specific areas of study the student would like to focus on.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

It is important to scaffold instruction. I teach, then we try it together, then they try it on their own.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I use a lot of positive encouragement. I like to help them see the long-term goal as well as emphasizing a one step at a time approach to learning.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try to come up with an explanation that is related to what they already know.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

It is important to help students articulate specific questions about a problem, rather than simply say "I don't get it."

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

It is helpful to break the material into smaller parts for understanding. I help students see each part of what they are reading, and then put the parts back together to make sense of it.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would find easier material that they can confidently solve, which would build their confidence and excitement. Then we could build on that to go through more complex material.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I like to use questioning techniques. Asking the students key questions will tell me how well they are grasping what is being taught.
