Lorraine
Certified Tutor
I have taught English (with a writing emphasis) for over 30 years. I am retired but continue to teach because it is my passion, especially when the light goes on when the student comprehends a lesson, is motivated to continue their course of study and becomes able to fully apply the techniques taught. My students leave my class with a clear understanding of the fundamental structures of writing. In short, if my students are motivated to learn, they will be successful.
I hold a BA in English and an MA in Education. I am a national board certified teacher and published a book in 2005, Inspired English, which details my teaching philosophy and used as a resource in many classrooms. In short, the book teaches teachers how to raise test scores and improve students writing ability through the teaching of literature. I have extensive experience teaching Literature and Writing at the middle school, high school, and college levels. I introduced my middle school students to the writing process and the fundamental elements of good writing. I taught seniors in high school the skills they would require in order to be successful at the college level. And I spent several years teaching freshman college students the same skill set. In recent years I have tutored literature and writing classes, as well as English as a second language.
My greatest strength is my ability is to teach writing with a focus on student success. Through my hands-on approach, I move students to a greater understanding of the elements of good writing and an improved ability to write.

What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is to have my students actively engaged in the subject matter, to allow them to practice for mastery, and to enable them to apply the concepts taught in the real world.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In the initial contact with a student I want to get to the know the student, to develop a positive relationship - a relationship that is critical to the teaching process. I also want to learn about their past experience with the subject matter and understand what the student's goals are for our class.
