What is your teaching philosophy?

Making sure the student fully understands the topic they are having trouble with. I want to make them an expert at what they once saw as an academic hurdle.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know what they are having trouble with. Assess where they are making mistakes, and discuss ways to improve their ability in that particular subject.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

BY providing them with tools, such as multiplication charts and other academic materials, to help them learn on their own in an engaging and "fun" manner.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By congratulating their success, such as when they get answers correct and when they begin seeing improvements in the classroom (such as higher scores on exams).

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Break it down and make sure they are comfortable and don't feel "silly" when asking a question. Time is no issue; I have plenty of patience to sit and go over a topic in multiple different ways in order to ensure the student fully understands.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would form grammar charts and ask them to study certain words to help build their vocabulary. Also, by using picture books and staying on each page, asking the student to read aloud, and then asking them how each picture relates to what they just read.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Patience is definitely required; also, finding ways that they can relate to the subject more.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Find ways they can relate to each subject.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

After I believe the student fully grasps the topic or subject, I would pull questions from websites and ask them to do a couple each day to refresh their memory and keep them sharp on the subject they just mastered.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By encouraging them along the way, and never making them feel "silly" for asking a question.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

The first day, I would ask them to do a couple math problems on their own so I can quickly realize where they are making the mistakes, and then work towards eradicating those errors.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By seeing what works best for each student, such as lecturing the students or quizzing them.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Scratch paper. Dictionary. Calculator. Just to name a few.
