I have had the privilege to tutor my classroom students and have had a tremendous amount of success with seeing them grow academically.
I celebrate all growth with my students. I believe that in order to be successful and to continue being successful, as students and adults it is important to celebrate any amount of individual growth we receive. Whether it be academic or in our personal lives!

How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Through self-motivation. If a child is self-motivated to want to learn and be successful, they can do anything they put their mind to. They have to want it for themselves.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would like to get to know a little about the student first. What their favorite subject is, favorite activity, food, etc.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I always like to have mini-celebrations on a child's learning. I want them to continue to get excited about all of their accomplishments and growth. This in turn will help a child stay motivated just knowing they are doing awesome!
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would break the concept down as much as possible and show them tons of different strategy to understand the concept. There are always more ways than one to learn something. This is especially the case with students. As teachers, we have to make sure we differentiate our instructions to meet the student's needs.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I am a big fan in chunking reading and discussing what we read. I develop very generic, high-rigor question stems that we can use for any form of reading. I also like to let the child choose the reading material, whether it be a magazine, a favorite book or even the sports section in the newspaper. This will increase their engagement and their comprehension. We can then transfer this over to actual reading assessments and I can show them how to use those same strategies.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
When it comes to math, I am big on technology as well as manipulatives in order to increase engagement. There are so many online resources that you can use to help you grasp a concept.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would show them how this relates to the real world. It is always good when a student can see how they can use their learning outside of the classroom.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
As stated prior, I am big on chunking reading and discussing what we have read. With math, I like to show them many ways to solve the same problem, and they have the choice to decide which way works best for them. I also love visuals. So, drawing pictures in both math and reading differently can increase a student's understanding.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I show them what they can do. I always like to start with what a student can do before we jump into something they can't do. I like to add on to their strengths, because this will help them be more confident in something they are struggling with.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I like to start the student on their grade level's content first. I have to see where we need to start. If we are needing to fill in a few learning gaps. I am able to see this through starting them at their own grade level first, and then going from there.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I feel like my tutoring style should always adjust to the student's needs. All of my tutoring sessions cannot start and end the same, because all of my students are not the same. I differentiate my instruction and tutoring materials according to what that particular child needs.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I will use a lot of online resources as well as some state testing resources to get us started. I then go into the particular curriculum for the grade or subject I am tutoring in.
What is your teaching philosophy?
I want to grow all kids! With this, I celebrate all individual growth big or small! As long as they are growing, I know I am doing what I am supposed to be doing as the tutor.
