Certified Tutor

I am an adult student, and I understand how some levels of education can be very challenging. I have needed tutoring for my hurdles, and I am here to help you or your children jump your hurdles.

I have enlisted many tutors to help me through my challenges. I know it's frustrating , but I know the reward of the achievement. I am very grateful for the enlistment of my tutor's help, especially during times of despair.

Tutors give you the help and confidence required for learning. I am patient, caring, knowledgeable, responsible, and reliable. I am a good communicator, I listen well, and make sure you understand the material needed for success.

I am currently attending Eckerd College and will be graduating in May 2017 with a Bachelor's Degree in Human Development.

I will then go on to graduate school at Florida State University for my Master's Degree in Social Work.

It is my nature to help, teach, and care about others. I want you to succeed as much as you do!

What is your teaching philosophy?

There are four methods of teaching. People learn and comprehend differently. The four methods of learning are: visual, auditory, read/write or kinesthetic. The student relates best to one of the four methods.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

The first session will identify the best method of learning necessary for the student, and we'll discuss learning tools needed, expectations, scheduling, answer questions, and begin the session.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

For a student to become an independent learner, they must first identify their best method of effective learning. Resources for learning are paramount, as well as prioritization, and organization.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

To help a student stay motivated, good communication is necessary, along with encouragement and sincerity. It is important to make sure the student excels and is given kudos for their accomplishments.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, their predominant method of learning must be identified. I would try each of the four proven learning methods to see which is most effective.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

To help students having difficulty with reading comprehension, first I must identify what they understand. Secondly, I need to identify what they do not understand, and break down the paragraphs to form strategies for learning.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I first explain the areas of difficulty to the student, using alternative methods of learning for better understanding. I share examples of my past method experience, and encourage ability and confidence within the student with a goal of independence.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would help build student excitement by defining obtainable goals, design a reward system based on likes of the student, tracking progress and keeping records, and positive reinforcement.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Techniques used to make sure the student understands the material are: explaining ways the materials used are important for learning, stressing understanding of the importance; constant review of the concept to ensure understanding; exercising repetition and exampling, using easier examples and building toward more challenging; and introduction of new ideas, starting with a simplistic approach.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Building confidence in a student requires confidence in the tutor. A student/tutor relationship is required. Start with small tasks and make sure their mind is processing the concept. Give positive feedback, encouragement, and map progress.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

To evaluate a student's needs, an assessment of background knowledge and skills needed for the subject is necessary to identify the student's level of knowledge. The performance based assessment will identify strengths, weaknesses, and give indication of course pace and methods.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I would adapt my tutoring by first identifying the student's most effective strategy method of learning by asking a few questions. I must review and be prepared for each learning method and examples for each session, making sure the student understands the concepts before proceeding to more complex areas.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Depending on the preferred learning method, the materials would be different. Perhaps a video would be presented, an audio lesson for study, printed assessments, quizzes, books, notebooks, printed information, or emailed study guides.
