What is your teaching philosophy?

Teaching through problem-solving in relatable terms.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know their personality and interests as well as their academic strengths and weaknesses.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By teaching them to properly dissect information related to the problem at hand and to be resourceful.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Ensure that they are practicing on their own and give them digestible practice plans to follow.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Find out what they do understand around the topic and have them also explain their thought process around solving problems relating to the concept.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Help them understand what parts are important and worth focusing on.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Finding out what interests them and what they are good at and trying to draw parallels to the problem subject at hand.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Draw parallels to a subject that does interest them and explain the "real life" use cases related to the subject.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Problem-solving, as opposed to regurgitation.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I find out what their strengths are and approach the target area in a way that would interest them.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Depends on the student, but I am a fan of short videos and interactive media to supplement typical one-on-one problem-solving.
