To have patience and understand that everyone does not learn at the same pace, to utilize various methods as needed, and to promote success by being informative, knowledgeable, and approachable.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Give a test to determine strengths/weaknesses, discuss what areas need improvement, talk to the student to determine educational goals/needs, and develop a subsequent tutoring plan.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By explaining the importance of taking initiative by discussing student goals and informing them where tools can be found by serving as mentor/tutor.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Keep tutoring sessions interesting and productive by being available for the student and by reiterating educational goals.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Try different methods of teaching to determine what works best.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Go over phonetics and word construction with the student.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Focusing on areas needing improvement, testing, and periodically focusing on the student's educational goals.

Explain learning methods in a way comprehensible to the student. Give an overview of the subject matter. Display enthusiasm.
