What prompted you to seek tutoring?

I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

My Name is Juan Betancourt. I moved to Florida from Puerto Rico at age 13. While in Puerto Rico, my mother was the head of the autism department in the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) and looked over many classes filled with both children with and without disabilities , so I am no stranger to the classroom lol. When I moved to Melbourne Florida I spent my whole 8th grade summer not only learning all the english I possibly could, but perfecting my pronunciation.
I graduated from Eau Gallie High School in 2009 and Moved onto East Florida State College where my earning my degree became harder to attain that I previously thought due to accepting a job offer for a world tour with "Americas Got Talent" 2011's second runner up act. But I'm back now, and everything Ive learned has made me realize I want to teach people anything I possibly can, especially if that is how to communicate with different cultures.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Learning something new should always be a combination of having fun and pushing forward through a feeling of self-motivation brought on by steady progress. If this is done correctly, memorization comes accidentally.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Find out what they like and how they learn best so that I may personalize each lesson in order to facilitate their learning experience.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By teaching them how to actually understand the subject over just memorizing and regurgitating.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By showing him/her the progress they have made.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Manipulate the lesson in a way that matches up with however the student learns best.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I give them something they are insanely interested in knowing already.
