Certified Tutor

I am a graduate of the University of Oklahoma. I earned my Bachelors degree in Letters with a focus on the Classics, and am in the midst of applying for graduate programs in the field of Comparative Mythology. While attending university, I was continually leading study groups and providing writing and editing help for my peers. My education before college was rather unorthodox, in that I was homeschooled by my mother, who brought in students who needed more individual attention than was being provided for them in public or even private school. Having been educated in such an atmosphere through grade 12 has blessed me both with the experience of having watched quality tutoring occur every day and of tutoring others from a very young age. I have always found immense joy in tutoring. Helping others learn is a wildly rewarding pursuit. I believe that tutoring is essential because every individual learns differently - every brain moves in intricate and astounding ways - and trying to educate every student in the same manner can end in frustration and disappointment. My favorite subjects to tutor are Writing, Essay Editing, Reading Comprehension, and English, because I find these are the subjects which are easiest for me to connect with emotionally, and thereby elicit a response from a student and get them more interested and involved.
I am currently approved to tutor Writing, English, Essay Editing, Phonics, English Grammar and Syntax, Elementary School Reading, Elementary School Writing, Elementary School Math, Spelling Bee, Middle School Math, Middle School Reading, Middle School Writing, Middle School Reading Comprehension, Pre-Algebra, High School English, High School Writing, ACT Writing, Test Prep, College Application Essays, College English, ACCUPLACER - Listening, ACCUPLACER - Reading Skills, ACCUPLACER - Language Use. My interests outside of academia are reading, hiking, yoga, cooking, music, and dogs. :)

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that learning occurs differently for every individual, and it is important as a teacher or tutor to pay attention to the ways in which any student learns. I do my best to find ways by which to make the subject matter more interesting or important to the student by relating principles to everyday life. For example, if I were to help a student write an essay on a book, I would first have a discussion with the student about how the book made them feel and why it did so, then discuss any way they could relate the book to their own life. After gaining some idea of the student's response, outlining a plan for a thesis statement and paragraph topics becomes a bit more accessible.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In the first session with a student, I would hope to get to know them a little bit and know what their interests are and what kind of sense of humor they possess. I would also like to outline personal academic goals and identify any particular sticky spots on which to focus.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Encouragement may be a tutor's main job. It is important to remind students that every person learns at his or her own pace and in their own manner. Reminding students how far they have come and reinforcing their self-confidence is vital. When I was a student and didn't want to do a lesson or study for an exam, I often set for myself small goals with small rewards. For example, if I had a long reading assignment, I would reward myself with a Skittle or some other small treat for each page I read. This is a method that has worked for me personally, and I think it may work for others as well!
