What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is simple. Teach one, each one different. Everyone learns differently, and once that is determined I can help each student reach their goal.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

The first session would be an ice-breaking session. I want the student to feel comfortable with me and vice versa. We would get to know each other. I would make them feel comfortable by letting them teach me something I don't know. Everyone can learn something from someone else. When students feel that they can also teach someone something, that builds their confidence.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help a student become an independent learner by helping them understand the ways they could learn. When they can identify that and feel that they have control in the process, I think that encourages them to be more independent

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help a student stay motivated by praising their efforts. Even if there are struggles, students need to feel that they will get it, no matter what.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

With reading comprehension, it's important to build off of what you already know. Therefore, I would ask the student to give me an idea of what they gather from the words they do know to help them build on the ones they don't know.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I am very organized and like to conduct things in an orderly fashion. I always emphasize "no question is a stupid question". A student must feel comfortable with you so that they can feel comfortable asking questions. From there, I can use different learning techniques with them and determine which ones helps the student learn more effectively.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would praise how great the student is doing. It's always exciting to see students excel. Simply put, when students overcome struggles, it shows that they are much more than that challenge.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Understanding learning material has to be interesting for students to stay motivated. Incorporating games, role playing, and hands-on learning techniques keep the material interesting, which encourages the student to want to participate.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Building confidence is easy. I first tell a student that it takes incredible courage and strength to want to better themselves. I also acknowledge student's accomplishments and emphasize how proud I am of them, regardless of their progress. I continue to support students throughout the entire process and let them know that they can do anything, even though they struggle. I also like to share stories about the weaknesses of successfully people to let them know that everyone has struggles that they overcame.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate students' needs by following their progress. If a student is doing well, I introduce additional learning tools to help the student continue to excel. However, if the student is still struggling, I find new ways to help them overcome their struggles.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Because I have trained a diverse group of people for years, I've found that it's imperative to learn each person's learning style. I can identify right away how a student learns. Because of my flexibility in teaching different styles, it helps me to adapt much quicker.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I like to use various learning materials. I read the material, and I have the student take notes to see how they are receiving what they hear. I have cue cards, my laptop for online material and I role play with the student to teach me.
