I used to teach Pure Maths, Applied Math, Mechanics and Additional Maths to students who struggled with the subjects.
I have a lot of time on my hands and love to see young people progress. I think they are missing role models in today's society.
I am originally from Trinidad and Tobago. Now retired and live in San Antonio, USA.

How would you help a student stay motivated?
Find different ways to explain the concept. Sometimes, different authors present the material in ways that they can understand.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
First, grasp the concept of Arithmetic. Then, try to apply the concept to Algebra. Work problems from past exam papers.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Sometimes, by holding discussions with students to determine their fears. The thought of numbers causes fears in their minds.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Answer as many questions on the topics as possible.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Get them to check their own progress as they answer the questions.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Provide simple tests on the subject matter.

I use examples which illustrate the subject matter.

Materials relevant to the syllabus.

Each child must pass his or her exam.

Get to know the student's level of understanding of the subject.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Encourage the student to do as many questions as possible until the subject matter is understood.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Sometimes, I may have to provide assistance in English comprehension.
