What is your teaching philosophy?
I teach to help students understand the concepts, and not just for passing a class.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would like to get to know my student first and his/her problem with math.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I can teach them different techniques, as well as how to recall simple formulas.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
There's always something to learn; math is just the foundation of everything.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I could improvise/introduce different techniques they don't normally learn in class (i.e. using objects to show how certain problems can be viewed differently).
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I'm not that great when it comes to reading comprehension myself. However, if its the math problem, I'm second to none.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I try to make my teaching fun, so students always want to learn from me and always pay attention to the lesson. I sometimes tell jokes or about my learning experience.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I can give them examples where these subjects can be applied in the real world. Also, let them know how important they are.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I always make sure that the students leave my class with full understanding of the material. If anything, they can call me during my free hours.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
My practice problems can sometimes be challenging. I tell them if they understand my math practice problems, there's nothing to be afraid of.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I usually ask them what they are lacking. Usually after a few minutes I can tell what they need, whether it is a learning pace that they're lacking or the materials itself.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I am very versatile. I try to make my students comfortable learning at their own speed. However, I also like to push/motivate them to do better each time.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Most of the time, I help reinforce the concepts students learn in class, then we cover homework, and then my own practice problems to see if they really grasp the concepts.
