Certified Tutor

Hello,

My name is Hager and I am so excited to be on the Varsity Tutors team! I feel I have the didactic and personable skills necessary to become a good tutor. I obtained my BS in biology from Georgetown University. I am now a graduate student in Georgetown University, obtaining an M.S. in Pharmacology. As a genetics teaching assistant during my undergraduate years, I oversaw a laboratory classroom. I helped students understand laboratory experiments and answer post-lab assignments. After graduation, I worked as an ophthalmic technician; I taught my patients about every element of a visit in an effort to show them I care.

I enjoy working with students in the fields of mathematics and the sciences. I am well versed in the STEM disciplines, and would love to deliver core concepts to students in a comprehensible manner. Every student can master scientific concepts, especially when tutors reinforce interdisciplinary thinking in order to make sense of laws and phenomena.

In addition to the sciences and mathematics, I feel I could effectively tutor students on the writing component of the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section of the SAT (I scored an 800 on the math section, and a 740 on the writing section of the old SAT exam). I feel I have mastery of core grammatical laws and diction. I would really enjoy working with students for SAT preparation.

When I am not studying for exams or working as a tutor, I like to play the guitar and watch my favorite shows (Downton Abbey, Gilmore Girls, Archer). It is always healthy to unwind and pursue the extracurricular activities you most enjoy.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to working with you!

What is your teaching philosophy?

Every student can master subject material! Together, we can commit principles to memory by talking through concepts in an understandable way. Even reviewing practice problems can be used to rehearse or reinforce learning. When students can put what they have learned in their own words, they have mastered the content.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

During a first session, I will ask my student about what they struggle with most, and what they hope to achieve by the end of their tutoring experience. Also, I will cover both test strategy and content review throughout lessons, and I would like to know more about how my student learns best.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

When students can put what they have learned into their own words, they have mastered the content. Students can become independent learners when their tutor gives them the opportunity to ask questions and take time to think through concepts for themselves. I will periodically ask my students questions throughout the lesson in order to help them reason through content. If my student is having trouble with big-picture ideas, I will first teach him/her the core concepts, and then use sample questions to assess their learning. For instance, students can work through practice questions by themselves first; then, I will review questions with them, paying special attention to debriefing missed questions.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Pep talks are simply incredible. I remember taking the MCAT just this June, and my course instructor always uplifted our spirits with pep talks. Every student is brilliant, and just needs to incubate their brilliance by making sure they understand the material. The very essence of my job is to facilitate this genuine learning. I will motivate my students by reminding them that they can do it! They can achieve their goal grades with their efforts.
