Certified Tutor

I am a senior at UC Berkeley majoring in EECS(Electrical Engineering and Computer Science). I have been teaching mathematics, physics and languages for 8 years. I try to guide my students to the most efficient way rather than giving them rigorous amount of work, since I have witnessed many cases of students losing interest when given too much of work. I love talking about the history and philosophy of science and mathematics when trying to initiate the interest in certain topic.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

First, teaching them a technique on how to solve the problem, and show them this concept and how it's created.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Efficiency and raising a student's interest through history and philosophy of each branch.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Try to figure out what the student needs most, and which method the student finds interesting.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

The most important thing I try to share when tutoring is not how to solve each problem; rather it's more about study/learning technique/method. If the student gets to be clear with how to approach something that they don't know yet, then the process of learning can be very different.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I try to use an example that involve visual phenomena that one can see in everyday life. Also, I try to introduce the history and philosophy of the topic, so the student can see how and why this was created in what kind of paradigm and background.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I only teach reading comprehension for Korean and English(ESL).

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

This cannot be answered in a simple way.
