Self actualization and any accomplishments are based on learning and internalizing knowledge. I believe individualized tutoring assists in this goal. Therefore it is my personal goal to assist students by using tutoring methods such as listening to students so I understand what their needs are along with using a multi modality approach to help them progress and obtain their individual learning goals.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Philosophy of Education: Education is the mortar and bricks in which we lay down keys to higher achievement, self-worth, and higher self-esteem. Therefore, knowledge is the key to success. Each student holds their own keys to unlock doors. Once they begin to go through doors, they continue to unlock gates until they begin to reach the goals that they have been continually striving to obtain. Students are the stepping stones to the progressive and prosperous future of our society. Educators serve as the waters upon which they flow - a teacher’s responsibility is to guide them smoothly through the waters of life, by academically and socially nurturing and preparing students, so they can achieve milestones in learning. Ultimately, taking their rightful place among the imminent contributors to: the wealth, social reforms, esteemed citizens, economic leadership, accomplishments and achievements in our nation. In order to achieve their goals, students should perceive education and knowledge, as gifts. With this in mind, though, they may be appreciative of gifts; however, they have to decide if it is useful and what to do with it. I, as a teacher and educator, consider myself a road map. I can give students directions, but they have to decide which path to follow. I believe that each student is a unique individual who can achieve with their own individualized style; utilizing student's' strengths while channeling into their learning modality would assist students in their academic progress. For example, a student who exhibits math strengths could learn spelling by using numbers for letters thus making a math code to learn words. By accentuating fortes, you also help to build students' self-esteems, thereby motivating students to learn, giving them a greater feeling of self-achievement and self-worth.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Introduce myself. Listen to the student and allow the student to introduce himself. Find out the student’s tutoring goals. Set down some basic achievement parameters. Get started on tutoring.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Teaching students study skill methods and skills and strategies for longevity and independence.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Find different approaches to teach students, keying in on their learning modality as well as their strengths. If a student learns through songs and puzzles, I would approach the skill or concept using these ideas

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I teach them to use concept clues as well as breaking down reading into smaller parts. Asking questions throughout reading or, depending upon the student, reading through a paragraph, and then going back and breaking down the page for understanding. Depending on students learning modality, they may need to draw out what they have read as well as to review the questions at the end of the chapter so they can key in on essential questions and ideas. Using reading techniques, such as prediction and depicting key points of story, will help as well. In addition, comparing the story to a real-time event or having the student compare the story to a real event in their life. In essence, teach students reading skills and strategies.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Letting the student know that you are comfortable with them asking questions, and that you will be open to trying different approaches to learning so they can understand.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

By positive, intrinsic reinforcement and engaging them in the subject through using different approaches to learning, which utilizes their strengths

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would allow the students to develop some questions about what they have learned and have them answer them. I would also engage the student in a thinking game to see what they have learned. Throughout the session I would see if the student can successfully do strategies and skills on their own by allowing independent work.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By praising them when they do well. Allowing them to teach you, in their own way, what they have learned.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Through oral and written tests, as well as observation. Depending on the individual student and what is being evaluated.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

My materials will solely depend on what I would need to meet the needs of the individual student.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By observation, and assessments to find out what the student will need to succeed each day. I will key into strategies and skills which work for the student on an individual basis
