What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is to find where the student is struggling, and find something they enjoy in order to explain the area they are struggling in so they can understand it.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would get to know the student, make them more comfortable, and get started with what they want to achieve with our sessions.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can teach them easy pointers, that they can do on their own, to understand what they are having difficulties learning.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help them stay motivated with positivity. I would also keep our sessions lighthearted and fun.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would spend extra time on the concept, and if it is not sticking, I would move on and revisit the concept later in the lesson. I feel sometimes revisiting something that was stumping them makes the concept click.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Repetition helps with being successful with the student. I also find making a game out of the lesson helps them have fun, and learn what they need to learn.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Making a game or a challenge that they need to achieve helps them stay motivated. If that does not help, I would try to disguise the subject within something else; that also helps them figure out what they are having a problem with, without them even knowing.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I find sneaking in small quizzes helps the student retain the material. I do not like pointing out it is a quiz because I feel like that adds stress to the situation, but quizzing them about what they just learned, without them knowing it is a quiz, helps them become successful in the lesson.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Once they have achieved success in an area they were struggling in, I would then help them realize what they have achieved. I would let them know that what they have done is so amazing and that they should be proud of themselves.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I like to start with a small assessment in the area they are working on and go from there. I also like to see what homework they are working on and how they go about completing it.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I simply get to know the student. I ask them questions about what school is like, what they enjoy and dislike about school, and try to understand their personalities.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

It depends on what subject I am tutoring. I would bring my computer, paper, writing utensils, books, calculator, and flashcards.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would have them read simpler things and try to have them understand what they are reading. From there, I would move on to harder readings and continue trying to get them to comprehend what they read.
