As someone for whom school comes naturally, I always found myself wanting to help my friends and peers with their homework. Assisting them in learning a concept made me happier than just about anything else. I knew when I went to college that I loved helping people and wanted to do that for the rest of my life. I set out to earn a degree in education so I could use my natural talents and passions together to work with any student that needed help.

The first session is key to getting to know the student, their learning style and goals, and creating a partnership that helps them get to those goals.

Each student is an independent learner! A sense of curiosity exists in everyone. I can help unlock this curiosity and increase student confidence in their studies through a range of instructional methods based on the individual student.

They key to helping students stay motivated is finding out what motivates them. This will be different for each person. However, once it is discovered, it is my job to inject that motivation into everything we do together.

All students will have difficulty learning something, as being a stronger learner is a challenge for everyone. The first step in overcoming those difficulties is breaking down the reason why they feel stuck. This will help us create a plan to build their confidence, strengthen their weakness, and move forward.

Many people feel they struggle with reading comprehension because they feel like they aren't doing it like everyone else is doing it. If a student is struggling with comprehension, first we need to break down the goal of the reading. Then take our time to go through the text at the student's pace so they can discover their stumbling blocks. We work on smoothing these roadblocks until they can read with confidence.

When starting to work with a student, it is essential to find out about them. It is impossible for me to give individualized instruction to a student if I don't know how they prefer to learn. At first, I like to find out how a student self identifies in education. Then, I build on that based on their answers.

First, I find out why a student is working in the subject they are struggling in. Then, together I help them figure out what the motivation is to work on that subject. After that, I can create materials that remind them of this motivation, engage them, and build their confidence.

Frequent and meaningful assessments allow me to monitor a student's understanding along the way. This way, any misunderstandings can be cleared up before they take a toll on the student's confidence.

First, I have the student self identify their weaknesses and strengths. Then, we work together to break down why they feel something is a particular weakness. We work to build strength in the weakness slowly, in steps. Then we practice until the student feels their weakness is now a strength.

A variety of evaluation is needed based on the individual student. This can range from self evaluation to formal assessments.

My main goal is to help each student achieve the confidence to become an individual learner. I do whatever I need to from pulling engaging material, to creating unique lessons, to learning as much as I can about each student to adapt to their needs.

Materials range from textbooks, to custom created resources, to games, to online articles, to good ol' pen and paper! It will depend on the needs of the student.
