What is your teaching philosophy?

To educate is to become better educated; it is a circular process that improves with time. I believe the responsibility of educators is to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to succeed academically and personally. My teaching philosophy is based on the belief that education is the solution to many social issues we face today. As an educator, I will strive to encourage excellence in my students and myself. Course material should be challenging, interactive and relevant to current issues and events. Students learn and retain more information if the material is presented in an environment that is interesting and interactive. I strive to be a catalyst for others to pursue their highest potential.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In the first session, I believe it's important to accurately assess the student's learning expectations. I'd like to get to know their strengths and weaknesses so we can effectively build and ensure results.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Always keep the end result in mind! I'd constantly ensure the student of their abilities and help build their confidence. I believe this is a sure way to keep students motivated.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Stay patient and take the time to break down every step in the learning process no matter how long it takes. It's not about learning the fastest, but learning the most effectively.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Reading is the foundation of all subjects. If a student is struggling in this area, I'd start right where they are and build from that point. It's important to present material to students on the level where they are most comfortable and then incorporate growth tracks.
