I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

I love helping people understand the world of chemistry. I was afraid of it in high school, but graduated from college with a degree in chemistry, with a concentration in organic chemistry and biochemistry. I have taken post-graduate masters level organic chemistry course work and done organic chemistry cancer research. My research involves trying to isolate Hsp-90 in attempt to decrease the effects of cancer and chemotherapy on the human body. I am interviewing at various medical schools and eager to begin the next leg of my education.

For fun, I like watching sports. I wrestled for 4 years and 1 year through college. I was born in New York, but moved to Florida when I was 12. I lived there for 8 years and came back to New York for college. I walk the city to think.

What is your teaching philosophy?

One can not learn through lecturing, but only through practice.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would introduce myself first, and then I would ask them what they like to do when they aren't studying.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I'd teach them the best way to learn through practice.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Show them that the problem isn't themselves. They have the potential, and with confidence, the grades will come.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Practice, practice, practice.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Like everything else, practice makes perfect. I myself had a hard time with reading comprehension. I started to read the newspaper everyday. I started reading a book everyday and telling my mother and my friends about it to see if I really understood the book.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Taking the hardest problem for them that scares them, and then having them solve it.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Give them practice exams, and then have them do it themselves. It may seem hard at first, but as they start to get better and better grades, they will accept the challenge.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I'd ask them to solve some problems from their textbook.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Give them some problems to solve. As they get better at it, their confidence will rise.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By looking at their previous exams.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I have them tell me what scares them about the class, and then we tackle it head on.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

My mentor's notes that were given to me to do my research.
