What is your teaching philosophy?

I strive to help students feel confident in any subject, but especially in mathematics. My philosophy is to never give up, and to try and try until we succeed!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to the know the student, and address strengths and weaknesses in mathematics.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I have students do practice problems with me and then on their own. This is how they become successful!

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I keep them engaged in the lesson by relating it to everyday life. I also help them understand the concept in many different ways. I will keep up with the student and keep them motivated through every aspect of the subject.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

This is where an intervention would come in. If the skill or concept is too difficult, I would go back to the basics of the skill that came previously and master that skill. Then, we'd go back to the original skill the student had issues with and master it!

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would let the student chose a book or something they are really interested in and want to know more about through reading.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I want to start off knowing the student's learning habits, and I want to keep them engaged.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

For math especially, I'd let them know it may be difficult, but math can be learned, and it will be helpful in everyday situations.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I will constantly assess them with formative and summative assessments.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I keep them motivated and practicing on these skills until they finally master them! Also I tell them that I know they can do it on their own.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I base my assessment on their knowledge in their educational journey of mathematics.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

It depends on the student, how much they learn and what type of learner they are. Some students are visual learners, auditory learners, or tactual learners.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Videos, step by step explanations, props, whiteboard, and, if needed, a calculator.
