I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Teaching is my passion. I strive to develop confident learners who know how to find the answers they need. I start where each of my students are at and build from there making learning a fun experience. Learning happens most efficiently through a trusting and positive relationship with each of my students. Within this relationship we build from their area of strength and use their interests to develop skills in their areas of challenge. Students in this setting are willing to try and stretch themselves to meet goals in order to overcome challenges.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

It depends on the subject, age, and interests of the student. I believe in establishing a routine to help the student be attuned and focused for the session. Generally, this might look like a warm-up with movement and a fun challenge. At the first session it would include getting to know you activities, that would allow us to begin to build a healthy working relationship. Then, I would want to hear from the student what their goals for tutoring are and set the objectives for the day's session. The session would involve a focused lesson with movement breaks that are fun, reinforcing material taught, a focused time of new skill practice, and finally, a review of material taught that will include fun and movement. We will set an outline for our next session.
