Certified Tutor

I am a NYU graduate, where I studied Business and Political Economy. I first started tutoring back in high school, when I realized I had a knack for standardized tests. Friends and family would come to me for tips, and soon I had regular students. I also worked for a tutoring agency, where I taught classes and individual students prep for the SHSAT, SAT, and the HCHS entrance exam.

I first like to pinpoint my student's weaknesses. From there, I spend extra time in each session explaining those concepts and assigning specialized practice problems to them. This strategy, along with consistent timed practice tests and questions, is generally my approach.

I believe that all my students can achieve high scores once they understand certain nuances for their tests. Most standardized tests can be broken down in a very methodical way once the student gets a hang of it.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Keep explanations as simple as possible. I try to get students to understand problems on their own terms.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Introduce myself and the topic we are covering. Learn about the student's needs from himself/herself. Cater follow-up lessons according to the information learned.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Work through problems side by side along students. Help them learn the techniques and strategies for problem solving. Eventually, the training wheels will come off.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

First, understand why they are having difficulty. Try to present the concept in a different manner than the one they're used to. There are multiple ways to solve any problem.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Don't overthink things. Look for keywords and themes at a high level before trying to analyze multiple layers of meaning.
