Albert

Certified Tutor

I am currently a Nursing student at St. Joseph School of Nursing in Nashua NH. I studied Biomedical Sciences with a major in Medicine from the University of Buea in Cameroon, West Africa. I travelled around Cameroon, working for a non-governmental organization called "Let Children Learn" tutoring students in rural areas of the country. These included students who could not afford to go to school and worked on their own in small groups in order to achieve their educational goals. Since moving to the United States, I have also had the opportunity to work with students in my school as a tutor. This has offered me a wide diversity as I have worked with students from several countries and from different backgrounds. Because I come from a bilingual country, I am fluent in French and English, and I am passionate about science and math. I strongly believe that hard work and determination can lead any student to achieve success. I enjoy playing soccer, table tennis, football, and I also love singing.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I will start by trying to understand what the student knows about the topic, and the difficulties he/she has.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I will refer the student to videos and provide resources from credible websites.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I will support the student in his/her efforts and make sure the student understands that he/she can pass in any topic so long as he/she is willing to work hard.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

First off, I will start by making sure that the student understands the basics of the concept and then provide alternative forms of explanations such as videos and tutorials.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Provide them with auditory and visual tutorials. Make sure that they read when teaching them concepts.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

First of all, setting a comfortable atmosphere, and introducing the basics of the topic to the student.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Students are different in the way they learn. Some like videos, rather than lectures. Some students prefer question and answer sessions. I will use what works best for the student and encourage them to devote more time to the subject they are struggling in.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Assessment questions and summary statements.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Assessment questions and paying close attention to the areas the student has difficulty understanding.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

As a tutor, I should be dynamic, and should be able to change my tutoring strategies to fit what works best for the student. These include visual presentations, videos, and some moments of rest and reflection on what we have done. A tutor should adapt to the student, not the other way round.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use notes, a laptop for videos, highlighters, cardboard paper and writing materials.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe any student can succeed, so long as they are willing to work hard and persevere.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Offer praise and acknowledge students' accomplishments and set attainable goals for the student.
