Getting a tutor is a great way to help your child succeed. As a former teacher, I have seen my students who have tutors succeed more than those who have no specialized support. Sometimes, to get children to learn or accomplish special goals, particular resources need to be utilized. That's where I come in. I have a passion to see children succeed. This passion, paired with my background as a certified teacher and 20 years of multi-grade experience make me a standout choice to assist students of all types and ages. Furthermore, I am willing to consider and incorporate new data available on successful methods of teaching paired with children's enthusiasm of technology to come up with creative, fun, and effective approaches. The right methods start with the right resources, and with these, students will succeed.

What is your teaching philosophy?
Children are different and learn in different ways. Some children need to play games or use manipulatives. Some children need to listen to songs or regularly practice hard skills with an adult. Technology can be a great tool for many kids.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
My first session tutoring will be some assessing, discussing your needs, and how I best can help you feel good about having a tutor.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Becoming an independent learner should be every student's goal. Some students need help to learn how to succeed and habits to make them more successful. Being a successful student is becoming harder with school expectations.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would try to find out what strategies makes a student successful. Sometimes students need a reason to succeed. Finding a student's interest can help make learning fun.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Students learn different ways, so finding a strategy that works is huge. That could be as simple as a website, game, or manipulatives. Giving students reasonable, regular practice work makes huge differences.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Students need to process all the tiny skills in reading. Phonics, reading strategies, vocabulary, and background knowledge are big necessary skills for reading. Comprehension will take place after discussion, usually after reading strategies become easier.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I like to really hear about the problem areas and help parents solve these. My children are so different, and what each child needed was so different.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would find a topic or way of learning (like listening, visual, or movement for little ones) a student really needs to succeed.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would use something that the child has not seen or mastered, then assess the child. This method would be more authentic about true learning.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Students need to be successful to have confidence. I would be very careful to make sure this is authentic and the child is really successful.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I have different tools that I have regularly used in the classroom. In reading, I may need to access phonic skills and find a reading level a child is extremely comfortable with. This would be great to learn for successful tutoring and successful independent reading.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I would need to find out what type of learning happens in school and at home. Then, I can see what areas need mastery. I can use student materials, my materials, and technology.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Student materials or tutor activities that I have seen students work with success (worksheets, flashcards, books, or technology).
