My teaching philosophy is that if I cannot explain the topic to a student clearly, without confusion, then I should not be teaching the subject. If this happens, I will do everything in my ability to find a logical way to explain the topic.

In a typical first session with a student, I would discuss what we would be studying, ask questions to the student and the parents to better understand the student’s needs, and provide a general idea of how our study sessions would work. By asking the students and the parents, I will be able to make a better study plan and schedule to hopefully help the student succeed. After the session, I would send out a study plan tailored to the student.

I can help the student become an independent learner by showing them what tools to study with, and how to use those tools. Once the habit is implemented, the student should be an effective and independent learner.

I would help a student stay motivated by making the sessions interactive and entertaining. I also believe that if you can apply the topic to a real-world situation, then it seems less dreadful.

If a student has a difficulty learning a skill or concept, I would break it down to the bare minimum ideas and then begin to piece together the small ideas until the topic is understood. If I could not successfully find a way to teach a skill or concept in our session, I would then find a way to explain it in a way the student would understand before the next session.

Depending on what aspect of reading comprehension the student was struggling with, I would find an exercise that would work for them. For example, if the student could not sound out words successfully, then we could go over the sounds of the alphabet. If a student could not spell a word based on the sound of it, we could do spelling exercises. I would fit the session to the child's needs directly.

The strategies that I have found to be most successful when I start to work with a student is to first help the student understand that it is okay to struggle, it is okay to ask for help, and it is okay to not understand something (even after numerous times of seeing examples). I then show examples and try to work through a few problems with the student so I can see where the misunderstanding lies. When I see where the misunderstanding lies, I can then find a way to explain and help the student with the topic.

I would help a student get excited/engaged in a subject they are struggling in by explaining the background of the subject and why it is important. I would find how the subject applies in the real world. Once a student sees that they could actually use this information in their life, it tends to seem a little less tedious and a little more interesting.

I would build a student’s confidence in a subject by being supportive when they mess up, dedicated when they need my support, and excited when they understand a new topic. The confidence of the student will also be built up when they receive better grades and don't struggle as much.

I evaluate a student’s needs by working through problems and discussing with them where they are confused. I could also formulate short, concise quizzes for the student if requested, to see if our work has been successful.

Every student is different. I would adapt my tutoring to the student’s needs by observing how they react to my teaching. The study plan will then be changed and rearranged to best fit the student’s learning style. Each student would receive the teaching they need.

Each tutoring session is different because they cover different topics, and each student has different learning styles and needs. Typical materials that I would use in sessions are flashcards, worksheets, and hands on models. I would incorporate materials as needed or as they are requested from the student and the parents.

The techniques that I would use to be sure that a student understands the material could be a quiz question, practice questions, or having them explain the process as they find the answer.
